Picuni

A picture sharing app.

THE PROBLEM

Have you ever attended a wedding or birthday party where numerous photos were taken, capturing precious moments that were never shared with others? These photos often end up stored on each individual's device, hidden away and forgotten. In today's digital age, it's a shame to let these memories go to waste.

We have the opportunity to create a platform or application that allows partygoers to easily share and relive these special moments together. By doing so, we can enhance the joy and connection that these events bring, ensuring that the memories created are not lost but rather celebrated and shared for years to come.

Pic-uni allows you to create an event for any occasion, where everyone at the event can upload their pictures. These pictures are then accessible to all participants through a link or QR code. Now, instead of repeatedly asking your friends to send you the pictures from last night's event, all the pictures are shared conveniently in one place.

Competitor Research

I researched three main competitors and conducted extensive research to see how I could find a gap in the market and focus on the Unique Selling Point of the app.

  • When was the last time you shared images with those around you? Was it an easy task?

    • “The last time i had shared pictures was a few days back.”

    • “Yes, it was an easy task but you just need the time for it, as it takes time to sift through photos and send a few at a time.”

  • Are there times outside of huge events that you are sharing photos?

    • “Only at times pictures outside events are shared, such as eating out with family.”

    • “Or sharing pictures with loved ones who are not present.”

  • How often do you share images on a daily basis?

    • “Pictures are shared at least once a day on a daily basis, just to update people close to me.”

  • Have you used a sharing image app before? If so, what did you like and dislike about them?

    • “Not really, although i have used airdrop on apple if that counts. I liked it because it's super easy, convenient and fast to use.”

  • When was the last time you shared images with those around you? Was it an easy task?

    • “I last shared images on WhatsApp, but was not easy as you had to browse through your whole library to find the images.”

  • Are there times outside of huge events that you are sharing photos?

    • “Yes, based on the nature of the events, for example family events and gatherings. I just had my wedding recently and many people had taken their own images and shared them amongst their own groups, it would be easier if there was a common area to share images.”

  • How often do you share images on a daily basis?

    • “If the day was worth sharing pictures for then i share them, otherwise only when events are happening.”

  • Have you used a sharing image app before? If so, what did you like and dislike about them?

    • “I have mostly used WhatsApp, it is convenient as the phone library is linked directly to the chats which make it easier to share. I dislike the resolution of the image, when sending through WhatsApp, as it decreases the quality a lot.”

    • “I have also used WeTransfer, it is good for sending high quality pictures in a compressed format, however you can only a limited of images per transfer.”

Users

Primary User Persona

Leveraging insights from the three insightful interviews, I've crafted a user persona that serves as a guide for stakeholders to better connect with our target audience. This persona is a deep dive into the habits, goals and aspirations of our users, offering a 360-degree view and understanding.

User Stories

“As a daughter who is living abroad from her parents and siblings, i want an easier way to send images to my family and friends in the UK, so we can all stay up to date with each others lives and not miss big milestones happening to each other, such as weddings and birth of children.

As i still have ample amounts of family and friends around me where i currently am staying, i want an app that all users can have and share images. Opposed to some android users using WhatsApp and some iPhone users using iMessage, so that all users can transfer images among themselves easier without finding alternatives.

As a mother of two children, I want an app that allows me to send an unlimited amount / size of images and videos without hindering the image sending process or quality. So it does not become time consuming and tedious to send a few images at a time.”

Problem Statement

Jessica needs a way to send images easily to her family and friends because she lives abroad from them. We will know this to be true when we see that Jessica is able to efficiently stay up to date with her the activities in her family and vice versa through the sharing of images.

We believe that by creating an easier way to send images and videos, be it in big events or small for Jessica, we will achieve having 25% of Jessica’s time cut down in sending pictures, which can allow her to focus on other things, such as her children and home.

Sketches

Low-fidelity wireframes

To conceptualise my ideas, i began sketching out ideas that include the main features of the app.

I used Figma to transform my low fidelity and mid fidelity wireframes so the ideas can take a more concise form.

Mid-fidelity wireframes

After completing the initial phase of drafting ideas using low-fidelity wireframes, the next step in the process was to create more structured designs. These designs were developed with the goal of moving the prototype forward and enhancing its design and functionality.

Designs

To summarise, I found this Design interesting as this was the first time I was not given a starting point or rough idea of what the app would be. It was conceptualised from a rough idea of an issue that could be solved in the real world. This really gave me hands on experience of what working on a project in a real setting would be like. I gained a lot of insights and worked to over come all obstacles faced! I hope individuals will consider downloading Picuni when it releases on app stores in this year!

Picuni is now in development and hopes to launch by mid 2023.
